OUR

NAME

A name and image says a lot about a community.

Under our name we write 'many churches, one church' so we don't forget the many communities we come from, and that together we are one unified body.

In 2014 a youth group re-developed in Murrumbeena with a handful of young people. We had been trying to find a name for our group of people. After a little while a voice piped up one night at Youthgroup with the word 'Sonder' and how it was this 16-year-old's new favourite word. She explained it, and then grabbed her phone out to google it for us.  ‘Sonder’ is a word created by John Koenig, and is far becoming apart of the standard English vocabulary.

Sonder [n.] / “The realisation that each random passer-by is living a life as vivid and complex as your own – populated with their own ambitions, friends, routines, worries and inherited craziness – an epic story that continues invisibly around you like an anthill sprawling deep underground, with elaborate passageways to thousands of other lives that you’ll never know existed, in which you might appear only once, as an extra sipping coffee in the background, as a blur of traffic passing on the highway, as a lighted window at dusk.” *

We thought it sounded like a cool word, but little did we know that this name is what defines us as a community of people. We are a collaborative ministry, meeting together from many different paths, stories, churches and homes. Like an anthill sprawling deep underground with elaborate passageways to all of our lives, connecting us all together. 'Sonder' as a feeling, and action, is more than appropriate to describe the realisation we feel when we collectively meet together

THE FEET

The image that we stand with is a pair of teal feet; they are on hundreds of items that people own. This image has become a space that identifies us as a community as they stand for a the steps on a journey - that we stand as individual people, meeting from our paths that may be walking together for a while.

..i was wearing that.
